008 : Neil Zaza

To wrap up this week of new music, I want to talk about my old neighbor, Neil Zaza. Neil is a guitarist who is kind of internationally famous but not super well known in the U.S. I think it's because all of his music is instrumental, and we're really stuck on lyrics. So, Neil was my neighbor for a short time. He was always super cool. When he moved away, I kept in touch. He recently came home, after a European tour, and began filming a DVD/documentary. He invited me to the event, which was kind of awesome. It was almost exactly like a live concert except Neil talked to us a bit in the beginning and there were a fuckton of cameras around.

The DVD taping was actually a really cool event. I knew Neil just as my neighbor. I wasn't familiar with his work until he told us about it and gave us a few cds. Listening to the cds for the first time was interesting, but I don't think I fully understood his work. Seeing him live was pretty awesome. Suddenly, everything totally clicked and made sense to me. I would say it goes down in my top five music events of all time. Also, watching him talk to the audience and be so personable and relate to them was cool. I've never had a neighbor who was also a was interesting to see the guy who was my neighbor become the guy in a space full of his fans.

So, it's against the rules, but I took a ten second video. But I'm not going to post it here, because I feel like that would be not good. Instead, I'll take a video from his youtube channel so you can get a taste of him. I'd love to know what you think, because Neil is not like any other musician I've been into. Is his music your thing?
