018 : Genius? I'm not sure.

Have you seen this video by Marina and The Diamonds for the song, "How to be a Heartbreaker"? Check it out:

I discovered this while link chasing around the internets and read something about Marina saying that women are forced to watched videos with men surrounded by half-naked women, why is it a big deal that she did it? Sadly, subsequent google searches have not led me back to that article... The thought remained, and so I came home and watched it on my laptop.

The song is not so much my taste, but I'm pretty sure I'm a huge fan of the sentiment and the video. Marina had creative control, and this is exactly what she wanted : Calvin Klein models in speedos in a shower. It's definitely a different take on the usual, such as this disgusting video for "Shake" by Jesse McCartney:

Where I stand, I'm a fan of "How to be a Heartbreaker". There are so many examples of male-centric videos with women who are nearly naked for no other purpose than gratuitous objectification. So many songs with men singing about disposable women, that I'm happy to see a woman turn the subject on its ear and objectify men for a change. It reminds me of the first time I saw the video for "Superbass" by Nicki Minaj. Creepy pink swimming pool with me who were equally objectified. I'm not sure if this is feminism, all I know is I like it!

So, what do you think?

  1. Nicki Minaj is way too creepy for me to even finish watching that video, but the heartbreaker video cracks me up. I wouldn't call it genius of her to objectify guys, but it is clever and comical to me. Nice to have the shoe be on the other foot for once!

  2. Yes! I loved when Nicki did that video and this one by Marina is awesome too (though the guys aren't quite my type and I don't understand the Native American headdress). Jesse McCartney still looks 14 and it makes me uncomfortable that he's dancing with these women who look my age...

  3. @Heather : Wow. I think she's totally awesome. But if you ignore her, then you can see she jumps to shots of half naked men where she's touching and rubbing them. Similar to what men do to women in most videos. Probably not genius.

@The Loudmouth : I also didn't get the headdress. I was going to say something about it, but Marina is Welsh. Instead of calling the decision "cultural appropriation," I'm just gonna assume misunderstanding. Jesse's physical looks aside; he's in a suit, they're half naked. I find this just not ok.
