Marathon Training : Week 97 : The best sports bra

Other marathon training posts...

This week was another 18-miler, and it was HARD! Oh man, if the marathon is as hard as my long runs have been, I don't know if I'll make it! No, I'm sure I will. Everyone says it's different on race day. I'll make it. But what I'm really here to talk to you about is my bra!

Ok, so I started running and was a 38DD and now I was just measured after my weight loss made all my bras ridiculously ill-fitting and I'm a 36DD. Up until just last month, my plan of attack for my ginormous boobs was a regular bra and two compression bras. Any of my large-chested friends will definitely understand that situation! Last spring, I had tried looking for a better bra. When I started to run longer distances, I knew I needed some supplies. I was buying new shoes and I needed a water belt. I stopped in two different stores at two different times, inquiring about various things. Each store was a running specialty store and had a small selection of supplies as well as a large selection of shoes. Each store had a tiny selection of bras and was staffed with flat-chested girls or men. No one knew anything about bras. I just kind of gave up the search.

Cut to two months ago when I ran my first 15 miles. After the run, I experienced some really painful chafing where my bra rubs against the front of my rib cage. I ended up having to bandage it. I started looking for a better bra then. I started looking at Athleta online, because they have a store about 45min from me. I had looked online before and had seen Under Armor's bra site, but was nervous about ordering something from online. I called Athleta and explained my problem to the manager. She assured me that they had suitable bras. Also, apparently, I was allowed to wear the bra out for a run and if I wasn't satisfied, I could return it. To me, that's a really cool offer, and I definitely think anyone out there looking for gear should check Athleta's policies. There's something comforting about knowing you can actually try clothes out for a work out and still return them. I had planned on going to Athleta, but ended up hitting the mall closer to home after work one day. I went into Pink and found a really comfy yoga bra that was not supportive enough, but I ended up buying one for every day wear anyway. The sales girl was super nice and directed my to Victoria's Secret where I found THE BEST SPORTS BRA I'VE EVER OWNED.

Firstly, this bra comes in cup sizes, which is always a good thing. Also, Victoria's Secret has full measuring services. I highly recommend going in and being measured. On the day I discovered the bra, I wasn't going to buy it. I simply explained my issue to the sales girl and told her I'd be back to buy something on Friday, if I found what I needed. She offered me a measuring and fitting. So, we went to the fitting room and she measured me and then she gave me a few different bras to try on, including the sports bra. When we were done, she gave me a little card with my measurement and the bras I liked. This card has been invaluable as I've returned more than once to buy the bras I need.

This sports bras is pretty amazing. It offers tons of support, which I love. It's a little hard to get into, with the clasp in the back. If you can get a hand clasping it, I would be so jealous. Admittedly, the compression is not 100% for me. If I'm running a trail or pushing my pace, I still throw a compression bra over it. But truthfully, and any of my large chested friends will probably agree, I'm not sure there is a bra that will absolutely cover everything I need. It's just hard with ginormous boobs and high impact activity. However, I would say that 90% of my activity is covered with this bra. Also, it comes in fun, bright colors, which I think is cool.

I've been wearing this bra for about a month now, and I'm in love. I need to buy another one, for sure. I definitely recommend it to anyone who at all but especially for any girl who is out there wearing two or three bras to keep everything held in place. It's so nice to throw on one (or two) bras and be done with it!
