Fat Tuesdays : Little Black Dress

I really, really, really, really HATE cultural conventions. One of those conventions is the "Little Black Dress," or LBD, as some people call it. I hate it because I feel like it's started to define being a woman in American culture. It's listed as an "essential" in fashion magazines, but why? What says I need to wear black? It's touted as being great for all events; weddings, funerals, cocktail parties, other events, even date nights. But again, why? What if I just want to wear hot pink? (Yes, even to funerals.) I wouldn't say that I rail against the LBD, it's just that I've never bought into the cultural conversations around it.

Which is why it's kind of funny that this post is about a little black dress that I found recently. I wasn't looking for it, and I really have no idea how often I'll wear it. In fact, I chose to wear it to a family dinner where I could've worn leggings or really anything. I chose to wear it because it can be fun to dress up. I have a little box of jewelry that I rarely wear. I have a little box of makeup that I rarely wear. I have a pair of sparkly heels that I rarely wear. They sit around, defying the minimalist in me, begging me to finally give them away...but I don't. And I don't because I do know that even someone as casual as me, might want to dress up from time to time. This was exactly one of those times.

Sometimes, I just want to be a little fancy, you know? The dress fell into my lap. Literally! I was talking to someone at work about Larry and Boo's Emporium and she said, "Oh, I have four bags in my trunk going to the Goodwill." So I just went and took them! Came home and went through EVERYTHING. We did not find as much to turn into cute animals as we wanted. But there were actually a lot of clothing options for me and some friends! I picked through everything and this little black dress was one of the items I picked out. I was nervous, though, because it's only a size Large. I'm definitely rolling in XL right now. Since it's knit fabric, it fit! It fits snug, but because it's knit, that means it stretches over instead of digging in. I paired it with those sparkly heels I've had for so long that I couldn't tell you the price if I wanted to! I know I bought them on sale at Macy's. The head piece is from our booth partner and usually costs $8. The cat bag is mom's. So this is really an $8 outfit, I guess, since the dress was totally free!

  1. Lovely neckline! You look fabulous as ever.

As for me, I wear a lot of black because everything else clashes with the color of my heart. -_- Ha!

  2. I love that! Very lovely cut. I always hate how I find these nice dresses and I have to wear an undershirt though... I'm often envious of those with smaller bra sizes...

    1. Well, we're well-endowed and that is the way it is. Until our culture stops seeing boobs as equal to penises, then we'll just have to cover up! I wear more underthings than most anyway, because I prefer having my skin covered.
